Center Hung vs Offset Hung

center hung vs offset hung

Most floor closers and pivots sold are offset hung.  The reason is that this style allows the door to open and move out and around any trim on the door frame.  It simply keeps the door from binding up with the frame.  Just like standard hinges, the pivot point (shown in red above) is moved out and away from the edge of the door.

Center hung configurations allow the door to swing both directions.  A store might have an entrance door that allows people to push it open regardless of which direction they are moving.  These also have the advantage of the weight of the door resting in plumb with its center line.  An offset hung configuration bears the weight off to one side, placing stress on the pivot point.

Note the bevel on the door in each example above.  An offset hung door can use a standard bevel in one direction only, but a center hung door must be beveled on both edges.
